Meet the Team – Michelle Peterson

Welcome to our ‘Meet the SPS Team’ series!  We thought you might like to get to know the folks who help make SPS work.

First up is Michelle Peterson.

1. How did you get involved with SPS?

When I had my first daughter I wanted to get better pics of her. I knew Kyle from my hometown and from college and I knew he was an amazing photographer so when I saw he had a class out I jumped on it in 2012. I loved it and became involved in the online SPS community and fell in love with that. Kyle asked me to help out with the Facebook groups and the rest is history.

2. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I grew up in Central Illinois, married my college sweetheart, and we have 4 kids ages 9, 7, & 5yr old twins….and a goldendoodle.  I’m obsessed with photography….and blankets, oreos, and things that smell good.

3. What’s your favorite thing to shoot?

My family. The everyday moments that I want to remember.

I also like to try artistic things and try to create a great image using my kids in unconventional ways other than portraits.

4. Who, besides Kyle Shultz, are your photography idols?

I love Lacey Meyers, Jeremy Cowart, Tara Herron,  Meg Loeks, and tons of people on Instagram whose names I can’t think of right now.

5. What’s your favorite piece of gear?

My Nikon D800 and Sigma 50mm Art lens

6. What gear have you bought that you wish you hadn’t bothered with?

85mm Prime. I just never loved it and ended up selling it.

7. Do you have a favorite shot? Would you share it with us?

I picked this double exposure because I love how the raindrops add dimension and add even more emotion to her expression. This was my first attempt at an in camera double exposure and I just love that it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be and actually turned out like I had envisioned.  Many of my first time photography attempts have not resulted in success.

8. What’s in your ‘working’ bag? Why?

My D800, 50mm Art, Nikon70-200mm 2.8…because those are absolute necessities,,,,an extra battery because they die sometimes, extra memory cards because they get full sometimes, chapstick because I’m addicted, smarties for bribes, a lens flipper for when i need to switch between lenses, a lens buddy for when I shoot kids, and an optic cloth for my lens because sometimes they get dirty. 🙂

9.  If you had one (ish) piece of advice to share with beginners, what would it be?

My advice for beginners is take one step at a time. The more you learn the more you realize how much you don’t know. That is still the case for me.  If you take one aspect of photography that you want to work on, tackle that, and learn all you can then you can move on to the next thing.  It’s a journey and each step along the way is important so enjoy the journey.
